We loved our drive through the Iowa countryside. Several of the farm barns had these quilt designs on them. I researched to find more information about these barn quilts. Apparently they are an effort to draw attention to the dwindling number of old barns that grace our American farm lands. The community is helping to educate and restore these barns.
We also noticed that in Iowa, the corn & soybean fields are in these strange tiers. They look like steps in the countryside. On our drive, we passed alot of farmers harvesting their fields, loading the trucks with grain, and the cows eating the left overs.
In Iowa, they have Oke-Doke popcorn and they get charged $ .05 per pop can. At one store that we stopped at, they had these recycle machines that refunded money for cans, plastic, and glass bottles. At a local grocer, we bought a five pound bag of bananas for $ .99 and some yellow tomatos that were delicious.
We camped the night at the Gull Point State Park in Iowa (Highway 86) near the Minnesota border. The park was near a lake and we saw wild turkey, a squirrel & a salamander. Around our whole camp was large oak trees. The ground was covered with leaves and furry acorns. Papa said the turkeys, squirrels, deer, and wild hogs eat on all those acorns.
